EBT Easter Baskets
Corporate America offers Easter Baskets for people using their EBT cards (Food Stamps).
You know the economy is not doing well when corporate America figures out that Easter baskets that have toys in them may only be able to be bought by a certain population of consumers. In comes the non-toy Easter basket that is full of junk food so that it can be bought by those who are on food stamps.
I remember my grandfather telling me about the depression days when women bought flour in burlap sacks and used the empty sacks to make clothes for their children. The flour companies caught on to this and so they started to put flowers and other designs hoping the flour sacks would attract women to buy their brand.
I was raised in a working poor family and I remember my mother buying the detergent soap that had a glass or towel inside of it. I would get very excited about opening up the detergent box and digging out a new shiny glass or new towel that smelled like the detergent.
Politically this bothers me. I know that if all the money that this country spent on war was used towards education and things that help people to succeed, people wouldn’t need to depend on corporate promotions. They actually had a huge sticker on the baskets saying, “EBT Accepted”.
